My daughter, my dear friend Paul and I went to the recent Van Halen show on
January 26th. It was Eddies 53rd birthday and yes we sang to him. Yes, it
seemed ironic to spend $164 to see them sing and to have to sing ourselves.
Having seen the boys in their prime back in the day I knew what to expect
along with what not to expect. These guys are not 23 anymore (even Wolfie
who is only 16) so the gymnastics you got when they were younger were not as
evident as in the past. David Lee Roth's voice was not the same and he was
more like a circus ringmaster than a guy oozing sex appeal as he used to.
His voice was good not great, and he still worked in the scissor kicks
occasionally.
Having seen Van Hagar 3 years ago I knew the music would be top notch and I
was not disappointed. Eddie Van Halen, despite all he has gone through can
still rock your world. (Paul thought I would say kick your a** but I
didn't ) I thought Eddie was even better this time than last. What can you
say about Alex that has not been said before. Two words come to mind, John
Bonham. The guy has not lost a thing over the years.
The set list printed on the review somewhere totally rocked. Hearing
Atomic Punk, Ice Cream Man and one of my favorites Hot
for Teacher just made the whole night worthwhile. A lot of their songs
have been forgotten by radio so it was great to hear them again. Yes, it a
little weird to see a 50 something guy singing about wanting his teacher but
what the hell. It was a great show and I would do it all over again and
might do so when they come back in March. I just hope it isn't Dave's
birthday.
Suggestion to Dave... bring in a decent opening act!!! Who ever that was who
spared us to death with the Reggae sucked!!! Not only did it suck but it
was way too loud. I stayed for one song and went looking for a bar. The
crowd at show like this is always interesting. 40 something guys and 40
something women who have no business dressing like total prostitutes but do
anyway. You have had your day girls. Leave that to the next generation.
It was a great show and a great time as Dave held court and Eddie totally
rocked. If they make it to your town, don't miss it.
