I believe that Barbee may have come over in the 1100's with William the Conqueror, but Bland was on the original Middlesex 1640 land grant and married into that family.  The ship log has Barbee as Barber, from what I've seen.  My father has been in the Son's of the American Revolution since 1957.  Ruth Herndon Shields from Chapel Hill, NC, helped him. It is spelled Barber, Barbee, Barby, and Barbe.  It does mean Barbara, but Walla as Walloon means foreign too. France conquered England and it is sad that we really can't find out, so I just check everyone else.  We are English, as good as you can get.  It was not even Barbee until the 1500's after the Huguenots settled in England.  William Barbee belonged to Christ Church, a very elitist church like the Episcopalians are today.  Not a French speaking man.  Take care, Cece Barbee

Menika is an Indian name and there are rumors that she was a full-blood Cherokee. Not true.  Her parents were Thomas Poe and Mary Hampton.
Elijah was a Baptist minister and owned 17 slaves and a lot of delta cotton ground.

Note: There is an Elijah Barbee who was a fifer in the American Revolution and a private from 6th Virginia Regiment and 10th Virginia Regiment.  That is not this Elijah Barbee.

Note: Thomas Poe [5th great grandfather] was private in 1st Virginia regiment.  Thomas Poe's father was James S. Poe, Sr. [6th great grandfather], who married Mary Watts. James Simon Poe Sr. [from SC] was a Major in the American Revolution for the state of South Carolina.

She married Hershel Ketner (born circa 1870 - ) of Quinlan and had one child - Rosie Lena Ketner.

A relative of Rosie Lena Ketner named Lois Ketner Angel email, said that her grandmother told her that Mary Elizabeth (Eatman) Barbee Ketner was 1/2 Cherokee and Mary Elizabeth's mother was full-blood Cherokee.  The Joines and Barbee families have been talking about a Cherokee grandmother since my mom was a child.  Mary Elizabeth's mother may be the full-blood Cherokee grandmother (my 3rd great grandmother) that everyone has talked about but did not know who. Lois Ketner Angel also said that the Ft. Worth National Archives has an Amos Eatman (Mary's father) as a Cherokee.  Elizabeth Eatman's daughter Rosie Lena Ketner, on her birth certificate (1905), lists Elizabeth Eatman born in Oklahoma.   Of course, Elizabeth was born in 1860, before Oklahoma became a state in 1907, therefore, she was really born in Indian Territory.  I show Elizabeth born in Altus, I.T.  Rosie Lena Ketner's daughter, Beverly Dickerson (who is now dead), wrote the word "Ani Tsiskwa" by Elizabeth Eatman's name on Rosie's birth certificate.  "Ani Tsiskwa" is Cherokee for "Bird clan," one of the Cherokee seven clans.  Virginia lived with Hershel and Elizabeth (Eatman) Barbee Ketner probably more than she lived with her mom.  I am becoming more and more convinced that Elizabeth (Eatman) Barbee Ketner was Cherokee.

NOTE: Nancy Thomas, a Barbee researcher, told me on 9/16/2002, that Mary Elizabeth was born in Arkansas County, AR.  Mary Elizabeth's parents were Amos Eatman and Harriet Pridgen, both of NC.  Nancy Thomas believes that there is no Cherokee or Indian connection, but said that more research needs to be done.
